Travel blogs are a dime a dozen, but they come in all shapes and sizes. When starting out, it is important to think about the type of audience you want to draw and the content you want to produce. In understanding your niche within the blogging world, you can more easily generate content within a specific theme. Below are four popular types of travel blogs and the readers they attract.

Destination Blogs: One of the most enduring categories of travel blogging, destination blogs provide essential reading for tourists looking to book their own trips. These serve as personal, online travel guides for millions of people worldwide. They visit these sites for recommendations, travel tips, and reviews are particular destinations. If you choose this type of blog, it may help to narrow it into a category. Think: cultural destinations, ecotourism, and culinary tourism.

Budget Travel: Budgets restrict travel for most people. If you’ve been able to plan your trips and expeditions on a shoestring budget, it’s important to share your tricks. These types of blogs attract a huge following—they’re often some of the most useful, but also the most endearing. The transparency that comes with discussing finances will give your readers a better peek into who you are as a person.

Off-Road Travel: These blogs are best combined with an interest in ecotourism, backpacking, and nature. Amongst the most popular of travel blogs, off-road and backpacking guides are great resources for budget-minded travelers and adventurers alike. If you travel to unknown and off-the-beaten-path locations, you could find success in this blog category.

Family Bloggers: A surprising number of people travel the world with their families. Often while homeschooling kids, these families travel around the world to provide their children with a cultural education. They provide tips and advice on everything from home education to budget- and family-friendly travel.

Once you’ve chosen your category and niche, you’re ready to start producing content! Stay true to your travels and voice—if you started off as a destination blogger but want to talk more openly about saving money, don’t be afraid to switch gears. These categories are simply guidelines—never be afraid to switch up what you’re doing. That, after all, is why you’re travelling instead of working at a desk, right?

I didn’t realize family bloggers were their own category until reading this, but they’re right—there are so many families out their making their way by homeschooling. What a great idea.
