TRAVEL GUIDES DIRECTORY: GRANADA SPAIN
The high altitude city of romance and legends -- that is Granada. The Alhambra palace and fortress is arguably one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain, a pride of the town indeed. Established by the Nasrid rulers in the 14th century, the Alhambra is the principal and most astonishing piece of Moorish architecture in Spain. Set against the backdrop of the breathtaking Sierra Nevada mountains, it´s a massive complex that includes the elaborately ornamented Palacios Nazaries, a summer palace with its fountains and gardens, plus a hilltop fortress.
The city also has a Cathedral containing a Royal Chapel wherein the remains of Isabel and Ferdinand of Spain lie. The Albaicin also stands therein -- a quaint Moorish medina area with a labyrinth of narrow lanes and whitewashed homes. North of Granada is Sacromonte hill, known for its cave dwellings that once accommodated a large gypsy community.
